Our library achieved another milestone in 2021 when we published our 300th peer-reviewed trace mineral research study. Our 300th peer-reviewed trace mineral research article focused on poultry was published in the Journal of Avian Diseases. This milestone research evaluated the effects of amino acid-bound zinc, Availa® Zn, or zinc and manganese, Availa® Z/M, on chickens who were challenged with infectious bronchitis coronavirus (IBV).
This research shows how Zinpro Performance Minerals are effective nutritional tools to withstand, recover and improve performance of birds suffering from IBV infection. Compared to chickens fed sulfate minerals, chickens fed Availa Zn showed:
- A quicker recovery and significant reduction in respiratory signs at four days post infection.
- A higher antibody response in both serum and tears at fourteen days post infection in IBV resistant birds.
Feeding both Availa Zn and Availa Z/M to IBV resistant birds tended to,
- Decrease respiratory signs seen at six days post infection.
- Decrease airsacculitis seen at fourteen days post infection.
This information will help poultry growers worldwide as they use advanced nutrition to decrease the risk and impact of disease in their birds.
What Is Peer-Reviewed Trace Mineral Research, and How Is it Different from a Field Trial?
Peer-reviewed research is a scientifically sound investigation, in controlled conditions, of cause and effect, typically including several rounds of review by unbiased third-party experts. A field trial, on the other hand, is simply a big-picture look that involves many uncontrolled factors and assumptions.
There are three main requirements for a study to qualify as peer-reviewed research:
- It must have a quality research design that can be replicated by other scientists. Other researchers should be able to use the same types of animals in the same conditions and achieve the same results.
- There must be a proper and accurate statistical analysis. If the stats aren’t analyzed correctly, researchers will not be able to draw confident conclusions from their work.
- It must be reviewed by an independent third party who has no vested interest in Zinpro or our products. After multiple rounds of review, the research must be approved by these third-party reviewers in order to be published.
