Although he didn’t grow up on a farm, Robert knew as early as kindergarten that he wanted to work with animals. He spent hours with Herbie, his grandfather’s first off-track thoroughbred. As a teenager volunteering in vet clinics and animal shelters, Robert’s path to being a veterinarian seemed obvious.
But when he started at the University of Florida, he developed a new passion for equine research. He earned his master’s degree with a focus on reproductive physiology, then a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech with more emphasis on nutrition’s role in reproduction. Robert is fascinated by how nutrition impacts the next generation, how feeding the mare sets a foal up for a lifetime of success.
International Impact
In his current role as Global Equine Technical Specialist for Zinpro®, Robert impacts horses across the globe. Understanding the unique forages and feed ingredients available in different markets can make equine nutrition seem like a puzzle, one that he is eager to solve. He combines deep nutrition expertise with Zinpro’s proven mineral products to formulate new equine feeds and supplements that help their horses lead their very best lives, no matter where they live.
Horses and Humans
As much as Robert enjoys working with horses, he sometimes appreciates the relationships between horses and humans even more. As Winston Churchill said, “There’s something about the outside of a horse that’s good for the inside of a man,” and Robert feels more relaxed and grounded when he grooms, hugs or rides a horse. He’s introducing his two daughters to the joy of horses and finds it magical to see their eyes light up when they see a pretty horse running across a pasture.
At Home in the Barn
From the sound of horseshoes hitting the barn floor to the smell of the hay, a horse barn has always been where Robert feels most at home and at peace. He wants his customers’ barns to feel like an escape, too, which is why he is committed to helping solve their feeding challenges and earn their trust. He’s always looking for ways to utilize nutrition to address horses’ health, physiology and wellbeing.
Moving Forward Together
As part of the Zinpro team, Robert works with people of vastly different backgrounds and experience who are all pushing towards the same goal: improving the life, health and performance of the animals that they feed. In this collaboration, he sees endless opportunity to help make every customer’s horse the best that they can be.
