

{"id":57173,"date":"2020-04-08T23:00:07","date_gmt":"2020-04-08T23:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zinpro.com\/handling-changes-in-poultry-nutrition\/"},"modified":"2023-07-19T13:10:11","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T18:10:11","slug":"handling-changes-in-poultry-nutrition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zinpro.com\/en_na\/resource-center\/blog\/handling-changes-in-poultry-nutrition\/","title":{"rendered":"Handling Changes in Poultry Nutrition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s not very often that the subject of manned space travel comes up in a discussion about the poultry industry, but Dr. John Halley, Global Poultry Agriculture and Nutrition Leader at Cargill Protein, found a way during his presentation at our International Poultry Seminar in Chicago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Halley, the one thing that\u2019s\ngoing to limit how far we can travel into space is our food supply. Admittedly,\nfrequent manned space travel is not in the near future, but this did help drive\nthe main point of his presentation: The poultry industry is changing and so is\nthe way we feed birds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The industry has shifted toward more\nsustainable poultry production with more disciplined use of antibiotics. As the\nindustry standards change, poultry producers are going to have to step up and\ndo a lot more to improve the well-being of their birds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We caught up with Dr. Halley after his\npresentation to ask him some questions about how the industry has changed and\nhow poultry nutrition will be an essential tool for facing current and upcoming\nchanges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-q-a-with-dr-john-halley-cargill-protein\">Q&amp;A with Dr. John Halley, Cargill Protein<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Marco Rebollo: What are driving factors causing changes in the poultry industry? Is it mostly government regulations? <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Halley: In the past, it was primarily\ngovernment regulations and guidelines that were driving change in the poultry\nindustry. Today, however, consumer groups, environmental groups and retailers\nare having more influence and are actually the ones driving much of the change,\nespecially in the United States. For example, the trend of reducing the use of\nantibiotics in poultry production started in Europe and was government\nmandated. In the U.S., however, it is not government mandated, but is being driven\nby consumer demand and by retailers, such as fast food restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers also want animal producers and\nfarmers to be more sustainable. In fact, we asked 4,000 consumers in the U.S.,\nChina, Mexico and Spain which word best describes what they want a farmer to be\nand 30% said \u201csustainable.\u201d This rate was higher than any other\ndescriptor.&nbsp; We also asked what they feel\na farmer should care about most and 55% said providing safe, healthy, abundant\nand affordable food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>MR: How is sustainability defined in the poultry industry?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JH: Sustainability is probably one of the most\ndifficult things to define. Everyone is talking about it but there are many\nopposing views on what is actually sustainable. For example, some producers\nconsider slow growing, low feed conversion broilers sustainable. If you look at\nthe inputs required \u2014 more feed, more energy, more broiler houses, trucks, feed\nmills, etc. \u2014 most people would probably say that type of production is not\nsustainable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>MR: So, how difficult is it for poultry producers to get on board with these trends? <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JH: In some ways, poultry producers in the\nindustry have dreaded and held back from adopting these trends. Once they\nrealize it\u2019s something that they need to address, they realize it\u2019s not that\nbig of a deal. In some cases, it may require enhanced management, maintaining\ndifferent records or conducting internal auditing. It\u2019s nothing that can\u2019t be\ndone. For example, at Cargill, we are making a big push toward digitalization.\nAs we put those systems into our operations, it becomes much easier to manage\nthese types of production changes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best example of this is the reduction of\nantibiotic use. Poultry producers in the United States were absolutely dreading\nit and there was talk of it destroying the industry. The reality is that most\ncompanies started looking at how they could make it work and found that, while\nit was not easy, it actually made them better in a lot of ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>MR: What are some of the factors that are leading to changes in poultry nutrition? <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JH: When I first got into this industry,\npoultry production was all about growing a chicken without worrying about\nbreast meat yield or anything like that. By the mid-90s, it became very\nimportant in the U.S. to raise birds with a high breast meat yield to meet\nconsumer and retailer demands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increased demand for breast meat was\ndriven by the food service and fast food industries. They found the chicken\nbreasts were easy to prepare and were pleasing to the consumer whether it was\nplaced on center plate in a restaurant or on a sandwich. This eventually led to\nconsumers purchasing chicken breasts to prepare at home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>MR: So how did that affect poultry nutrition? <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>JH: In order to keep up with this demand, we switched from feeding total amino acids to feeding digestible amino acids like methionine and lysine. These amino acids allow us to reduce the protein in the feed, which is good for the environment, but still maintain high bird performance.
