Necrotic enteritis is one of the most common\ndiseases in the poultry industry and can have a large negative impact on\npoultry operations. Subclinical cases can lead to slower growth, while clinical\ncases can cause a sharp increase in mortality, ultimately resulting in lower\nprofits for poultry producers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disease occurs when predisposing agents\nsuch as coccidial protozoa cause lesions to the intestinal mucosa, disrupting\nthe normal function of the gut and its microbial population. This creates the\nperfect environment for Clostridium\nperfringens<\/em> to strive and bloom, creating characteristic necrosis of the\nintestinal epithelium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eimeria species can be found in every chicken\nhouse and in coccidiosis vaccines. For this reason, enteritis and necrotic\nenteritis are difficult infections to manage and require special attention,\nparticularly in programs with reduced antibiotic usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symptoms and Treatment Options for Necrotic Enteritis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At first, subclinical necrotic enteritis may\nbe hard to spot in a flock. In many cases, it is not apparent that a flock is\ninfected until there is a spike in mortality and\/or after performing a routine\nnecropsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With subclinical necrotic enteritis, the birds\nwill exhibit slower growth rates due to lower feed efficiency, little by little,\nfor several days before it\u2019s noticed. This\nmeans more days for birds to get to market weight, or in less marketable weight\nin systems where birds are processed on a certain day. Either way, necrotic\nenteritis is robbing profitability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The easiest clinical necrotic enteritis\nsymptom to spot is an increase in mortality in the flock. If mortality reaches\n2% or higher, the flock will need to be treated with an antibiotic to ensure\nthe infection doesn\u2019t spread to the rest of the flock. Other notable clinical\nsigns include more apathetic, less active birds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once their flock has to be treated with an\nantibiotic in the feed, poultry producers raising birds in a no-antibiotics-ever\nsystem will need to shift the flock to a conventional production system, receiving\na lower premium for that meat and again resulting in reduced profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manage Coccidiosis, Manage Necrotic Enteritis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Necrotic enteritis management is directly\ncorrelated with the management of coccidiosis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, administering a coccidiosis vaccine\non day 1 will cause it to cycle early and allow the birds to slowly build an\nimmunity to it while their immune system is not very reactive. This gives them\na chance to recover and return to normal growth rates before processing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If birds contract coccidiosis later in life,\ntheir immune system will be more reactive, and necrotic enteritis will have\nmore of an impact on their growth, ultimately not allowing enough time to\nrecover before they go to market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
