The effects of heat\nstress can be costly for livestock and poultry producers. Heat stress leads to\nmany production challenges that can affect growth, production and reproduction.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During\nheat stress, an animal\u2019s core body temperature increases, causing blood flow to\nbe diverted from the visceral blood vessels of the digestive tract to the skin\nin order to increase heat dissipation. As blood flow to the visceral tissue is\nreduced, so is the amount of oxygen (hypoxia) and energy available to the\nenterocytes (single layer of epithelial cells) lining the gastrointestinal\ntract. When this occurs, tight junctions that hold the enterocytes together\nweaken, allowing pathogens and their toxins to transfer into the bloodstream,\nultimately leading to a condition called leaky gut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heat stress leads to\nmany common production challenges, however some of the consequences of heat\nstress may be delayed in beef, dairy and swine. For example, lameness in the\nfall often occurs as a result of the animal developing a lower-quality foot\nhorn tissue throughout heat stress in the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In poultry, however,\nthe production challenges are seen right away. Much like swine, chickens pant\nin order increase evaporative cooling. Evaporation of one gram of water is\ncapable of dissipating 540 calories of maintenance energy, which can ultimately\nlead to the development of lower-quality eggs in layer hens and a lower feeding\nefficiency and growth rate in broilers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trace Mineral Nutrition for Heat Stress Management<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Managing the production\nchallenges related to heat stress can be mitigated by adjusting your livestock\nand poultry nutrition program. Producers should consider feeding a more\nnutrient-dense diet in the hot summer months to compensate for the reduction in\nfeed intake. This can be done by reducing the amount of fiber in the feed and\nadding more fat to increase the number of calories in the feed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trace minerals can also\nplay a big role in managing heat stress. Nutritionists and producers should consider\nfeeding higher levels of performance trace minerals \u2014 especially zinc \u2014 during\nthe summer heat stress months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because\nthey are more efficient and available sources of trace minerals. Zinc is important for the\nformation of structural components of tissues, molecules and epithelial cells\n(enterocytes) present in the intestine. It\nstrengthens the bonds between the epithelial cells in the gastrointestinal\ntract, helping to maintain the tight junctions during a challenge and decreasing the\noccurrence of leaky gut and related intestinal inflammation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is recommended that producers supplement 40 ppm of zinc from Zinpro zinc, regardless of the season. But zinc should be increased to at least 60 ppm and no more than 100 ppm in the summer when animals are dealing with heat stress. Trace mineral research conducted at Iowa State University<\/a> shows that feeding zinc from Zinpro\u00ae<\/sup> Availa\u00ae<\/sup> Zn <\/a>helps decrease the occurrence of leaky gut by improving the viability of the intestinal system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improve Thermal Tolerance with Chromium<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Chromium from Zinpro\u00ae<\/sup> Availa\u00ae<\/sup> Cr<\/a> or Zinpro\u00ae<\/sup> MICROPLEX\u00ae<\/sup> <\/a>can increase thermal tolerance as well as it helps to reduce the level of cortisol or corticosterone \u2014 involved in regulation of energy, immune and stress responses \u2014 in livestock and poultry. Elevated levels of cortisol or corticosterone cause animals to behave in a hectic manner, expend energy, increase susceptibility to infections and, ultimately, reduce feed intake. Lowering cortisol or corticosterone levels by feeding diets supplemented with Availa-Cr or MICROPLEX can help keep animals calm and keep them more willing to eat during heat stress events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oxidative stress occurs\nwhen free radicals and antioxidants are out of balance. Zinc, copper, manganese\nand selenium work as antioxidants by removing free radicals and protecting cell\nmembranes from oxidative stress. Requirements for these minerals increase\nduring stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Controlling Lysine Ratios and Performance Trace Mineral Levels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While it\u2019s important to\nincrease your performance trace mineral levels as a part of a more\nnutrient-dense diet during the summer, it\u2019s important to work with your\noperation\u2019s nutritionist to make sure you\u2019re not feeding too much zinc,\nmanganese, selenium or chromium. Feeding too much can actually have a\npro-oxidant potential, which will put more stress on an animal that is already\ndealing with heat stress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Producers and\nnutritionists should also consider an appropriate lysine ratio when making\nnutritional adjustments. If we increase the energy density of the diet by\nincreasing fat, we need to make sure they\u2019re increasing essential amino acids,\ntrace minerals and vitamins accordingly to maintain those ratios and adequate\nintake of all the different dietary components. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heat stress can lead to a large number of production challenges in livestock and poultry and can be costly for producers. The effects of heat stress can be managed, however, with a more nutrient-dense diet in the summer and increasing levels of performance trace minerals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
