{"id":56774,"date":"2019-06-12T22:00:11","date_gmt":"2019-06-12T22:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.zinpro.com\/cattle-hoof-problems-in-the-beef-feedlot-can-cost-you-plenty\/"},"modified":"2023-07-19T13:22:37","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T18:22:37","slug":"cattle-hoof-problems-in-the-beef-feedlot-can-cost-you-plenty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zinpro.com\/en_na\/resource-center\/blog\/cattle-hoof-problems-in-the-beef-feedlot-can-cost-you-plenty\/","title":{"rendered":"Cattle Hoof Problems in the Beef Feedlot Can Cost You Plenty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beef\nproducers want to raise healthy, profitable cattle because having sound,\nnon-lame cattle improves the overall return on investment for producers.\nFocusing efforts on lameness prevention and the management of hoof health is an\nintegral part of today\u2019s successful feedlot operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\nlameness in beef feedlots is not new, the increasing incidence of beef lameness\ndue to digital dermatitis is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-digital-dermatitis\">What is Digital Dermatitis?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital Dermatitis is often referred to as hairy heel wart, and its occurrence in the feedlot is growing. While not yet as prevalent as foot rot, it\u2019s important that you identify it quickly, as it is highly contagious. Digital dermatitis begins as lesions around the claw. They are raw, bright-red or black circular erosions and inflammation (dermatitis) of the skin just above the heel bulbs. The edges form a white margin, and overlong hairs surround the sores or are adjacent to thick, hairy wart-like growths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As\nfeedlot operators learn more about its prevention and management, now is a good\ntime to look more closely at what digital dermatitis may be costing you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lameness-in-cattle-impacts-economic-costs\">Lameness in Cattle Impacts Economic Costs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lameness in cattle is a serious\neconomic problem. Here are just a few results of a study of more than 1.843\nmillion head of cattle in five large western feedlots:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>13.1\npercent of the cattle were treated for health problems; of these, lameness\naccounted for 16 percent of the health problems and 5 percent of the deaths.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diseases\nof the feet in cattle accounted for 70 percent of all cases of lameness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lame\ncattle accounted for 70 percent of sales of non-performing cattle. The price\nreceived for salvaged lame cattle was only 53 percent of the original purchase\nprice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These\nsalvaged lame cattle were sold \u2014 on average \u2014 85 days after their arrival, yet\nweighed only 10 pounds (4.5 kg) more than their in-weight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ncattle industry has been researching digital dermatitis for more than 40 years,\nbut we still do not understand its exact causes. We do know that risk factors\ninclude poor hygiene, such as muddy pens; chemical or physical skin trauma; or\nskin barrier incompetence, which allows bacteria to more easily penetrate the\nskin and migrate to deeper tissues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul\nPlummer, an assistant professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal\nmedicine at Iowa State University, is conducting research to explore the cause\nof digital dermatitis. While the industry connects it to the pathogenic\nbacteria <em>Treponemes<\/em>, Plummer\u2019s\nresearch has shown that <em>Treponemes<\/em>\ndon\u2019t appear during the earlier development of the disease. This suggests that\nother bacteria may drive the disease process and later create a favorable\nenvironment for the <em>Treponemes<\/em> to\nthrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\nhave seen that supplementing the feedlot ration with performance trace minerals\nfrom Zinpro enhances cattle health, including good skin and claw\/hoof\nintegrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-trace-minerals-help-manage-economic-impact\">Trace Minerals Help Manage Economic Impact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2017 study by D. Dopfer of the\nUniversity of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine looked at the prevalence\nand effect of digital dermatitis in beef steers provided a diet supplemented\nwith a novel formulation of performance trace\nminerals from Zinpro (ZPM diet) compared to steers provided a diet with similar\nlevels of trace minerals solely from inorganic sources (CON diet). This was a\nlongitudinal field trial of 1,077 steers in a commercial feedlot. There was an\nadaptation phase, which was the initial 60 days of feeding the ZPM and CON\ndiets, and a post-adaptation phase which lasted until the cattle were sent to\nharvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the post-adaptation phase, the\nrelative risk of observing increased digital dermatitis prevalence was\nsignificantly (<em>P&lt;0.05<\/em>) higher in\nthe CON group than the ZPM group. Growth performance, final live weight and hot\ncarcass weights were negatively impacted when steers were observed to have\nactive digital dermatitis lesions (M2 lesions) compared to steers with no M2\nlesions over the study period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other\nstudies that have looked at costs associated with lost performance due to\nlameness in beef feedlots have shown these impacts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When a similar healthy animal is compared to an\nanimal with just one M2 lesion, the steer with the lesion had a significant body\nweight loss of approximately 23.2 lb (10.06 kg) and a mean reduction in hot\ncarcass weights of 12.1 lb (5.5 kg). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Average daily gain of lame beef cattle was\nreduced by 5.5 percent when compared to similarly sound cattle \u2014 3.41 lb\/day versus\n3.53 lb\/day (1.55 kg\/day versus 1.6 kg\/day).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lameness diagnosed in the finishing phase (121\ndays on feed until harvest) adds an average of 14.3 additional days on feed for\ninfected animals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nstudies conducted on the economic impact of lameness included results from a\nvariety of facilities: slatted floor, monoslopes and dirt lots. Additionally,\nproducers who have looked at these studies say, in their experience, these\nnumbers are a conservative estimate on impact. One reason may be that diagnosing\nand treating beef cattle with digital dermatitis takes a significant amount of labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-animal-wellness-concern\">Animal Wellness Concern<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing\nthe right things for these animals is a well-being issue. Primary concerns are\nwhether the animal has pain or distress, and whether the animal is able to\nexpress or perform natural behaviors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lameness\ncauses pain as seen in a steer\u2019s altered gait or ability to get up from a lying\nposition. Lameness will reduce feed intake as steers back away or are reluctant\nto come up to the bunk because of that pain. And, lameness interferes with the animal\u2019s\nability to express normal behavior such as moving freely and interacting with\npen mates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These\nnegative effects on the animal\u2019s well-being can lead to substantial economic\nimpacts through the inability of cattle to recover, increased days on feed,\ntime\/treatment costs, premature removal from feeding, and even death losses. Correctly\nmanaging foot health, diagnosing infections correctly and administering prompt\ntreatment are essential to improving the health and recovery of lame animals so\nthey can remain on feed and reach an optimal weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If digital dermatitis shows up in your beef feedlot, it can\u2019t be eradicated, but it can be managed.
