Livestock and poultry, just like humans,\nnaturally produce toxic substances and reactive oxygen species \u2014 small and\nhighly reactive molecules (free radicals) that have important cell signaling\nroles when maintained at proper cellular concentrations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While reactive oxygen species (free radicals) play an important role in the immune function, it\u2019s important to have a balance. Animals need the right amount of free radicals, and the right amount of antioxidants to keep free radicals in check. During times of stress, reactive oxygen species (free radicals) levels can increase dramatically, outnumbering antioxidants and lead to cell damage or tissue injury, otherwise known as oxidative stress<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trace mineral selenium plays an important\nrole as an antioxidant, helping an animal keep the reactive oxygen species\n(free radicals) in check. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suboptimal selenium status is usually caused\nby a decrease in feed intake during periods of high stress and can lead to a\nnumber of challenges. Challenges from suboptimal selenium status can include an\nimpaired immune response, poor fertility, an increase in embryo mortality, poor\ngrowth and feed conversion, as well as poultry carcass drip loss and decreased\nretail shelf life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building Higher Selenium Stores with Availa\u00ae<\/sup>Se<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During periods of reduced feed intake, animals\nwon\u2019t be able to get enough selenium through the diet to support optimal\nantioxidant function. At that point, they will rely on stores of selenium in\ntissues such as muscle in swine and bovine animals, or the egg in poultry. If\nyour animals have built up stores of selenium, you can get through those\nperiods of decreased feed intake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sows and cows will mobilize stores of selenium\nduring periods of low feed intake, such as early lactation or late pregnancy,\nand then will build their stores back up when feed intake increases again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s important for an animal to have those stores built up, and producers will need to provide them with the best source with the highest availability. Due to increased absorption, Availa\u00ae<\/sup> Se <\/a>builds higher stores than any other selenium supplement on the market.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improve Antioxidant Function With Selenium<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The body generates toxic substances, like\nreactive oxygen species by default, but even more so during periods of high\nstress and low feed intake. Reactive oxygen species damage cells and cause\noxidative stress. In other words, when feed intake is low, the demand for\nselenium increases and Availa-Se helps to balance the supply and demand of\nantioxidants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

GPx converts toxic reactive oxygen species, like\nhydrogen peroxide, to water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selenium Provides an Improved Immune Response<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An animal with a suboptimal selenium status\nwill not be able to respond properly to immune challenges such as mastitis, an\ninfection that causes inflammation in the mammary gland. Immune cells called\nneutrophils, which are in an animal\u2019s blood circulation, leave the blood\nvessels to create an immune response at the point of infection and, ultimately,\nremove the infection. If an animal is facing a suboptimal selenium status, the\nneutrophils will be slower to leave the blood vessels and will take longer to clear\nthe mastitis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A suboptimal selenium status will also cause\nlymphocytes \u2014 a type of white blood cell in the lymph nodes and the bloodstream\nthat helps fight infection \u2014 to do a poor job identifying antigens, bacteria\nand viruses, leading to a weaker immune response. It will take longer to remove\npathogens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selenium Provides a Better Start for Livestock and Poultry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Feeding selenium from Availa-Se to gestating\nanimals and egg-laying birds allows calves, piglets and chicks to get off to a\nmore successful start at birth or hatch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In poultry, selenium is transferred to the\nembryo during incubation. Selenium enriches the egg yolk, which is then\nconsumed by the embryo, helping boost that chick\u2019s ability to mount an immune\nresponse. Gestating dairy cows and sows transfer selenium to the embryo through\nthe uterus. By feeding selenium from Availa-Se, you increase the selenium\nstores in the embryo, calf or piglet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When gestating cows are fed Availa-Se, it\nincreases immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels in the colostrum, which is then passed\non to calves immediately after birth. A calf\u2019s immune system is not yet\ndeveloped to mount an immune response and relies on colostrum for protection\nagainst challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piglets benefit from increased selenium and\nincreased GPx through their dam\u2019s milk because piglets stay on the sow for up\nto 28 days while a calf stays on a cow for up to three days. By reducing the\nnumber of reactive oxygen species in the embryo, Availa-Se also improves the\nnumber of piglets born alive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Improved Milk Production and Growth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The ability of Availa-Se to improve milk\nproduction in dairy cattle ties back to selenium\u2019s role in improving the\nanimal\u2019s ability to mount a rapid and robust immune response. Selenium helps\nreduce mastitis and control inflammation, which allows an animal to utilize\nmore nutrients for milk production. While higher fertility doesn\u2019t lead to\nhens laying more eggs, it does result in more chicks produced from the same\nnumber of eggs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
