Zinpro Corporation sponsors award for excellence in equine extension, research, teaching and agribusiness
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Aug. 18, 2016 – The late Dr. Josie A. Coverdale, associate professor, Texas A&M University, is the 2016 American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) and Equine Science Society (ESS) Equine Science Award recipient, sponsored by Zinpro Corporation. Dr. Coverdale was the Texas A&M University equine science section leader prior to her passing in February, 2016. The award was presented to Dr. Coverdale’s surviving husband, Mark Coverdale, by Connie Larson, Ph.D., ruminant Research and Nutrition Service manager – North America, Zinpro Corporation, at a recent ASAS and American Dairy Science Association® joint annual meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“We honor and applaud Dr. Coverdale for her outstanding abilities and the incredibly positive influence she had on so many in our industry as an educator, researcher and leader in equine science,” said Dr. Larson. “Dr. Coverdale was a gifted teacher, loved by her students, as demonstrated by her distinguished achievement award for college-level teaching from the Association of Former Students in 2015-2016. She was also a leader in research that focused on fetal programming, foal health, gut microbiome and the modulation of inflammatory molecules associated with arthritis. In addition, she regularly and effectively communicated equine research results both nationally and internationally.”
Born in Jefferson, Iowa, and raised in Krum, Texas, Dr. Coverdale earned her doctorate and master’s degree in animal nutrition from Iowa State University and a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Texas A&M University. In 2003, she joined the University of Georgia as an assistant professor. In 2006, she joined Texas A&M University’s equine science section, with a promotion to associate professor in 2012 and another promotion to equine science section leader in 2015.
The ESS and ASAS Equine Science Award honors outstanding achievements in the areas of extension, research, teaching or agribusiness in the equine industry. Dr. Coverdale is the eighth recipient of the award, which has been sponsored by Zinpro Corporation since its inception in 2008.
