DD Check App: for iPhone and iPad

DD Check App is part of an integrated strategy to identify, record and manage digital dermatitis (DD) in dairy herds. It was developed by Dr. Dörte Döpfer, Tom Bennett, and Dr. Marlene Tremblay of the Food Animal Production Medicine Section, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Outbreaks of DD often become a vicious cycle that takes a toll on dairy herd productivity and profitability. Infected animals carry a reservoir of disease that leads to repeated outbreaks, so a strategy to identify the disease early is critical to controlling its spread. That’s where the DD Check App comes in.

With a tap on the iPad or iPhone screen, users can record lesions, which leads to a better understanding of DD prevalence across the herd in its various stages. When collecting data, there is no need for an Internet connection so the app can be used wherever it’s most convenient – in the parlor, chute or pen.

DD Infection Model

Users may access the DD Infection Model to initiate automated statistical prediction. This model may be accessed through the app once the required information on individual cows has been entered and an Internet connection is available.

  • Images and descriptions of lesion stages help users understand what to look for and how each stage should be recorded.
  • Accurate identification by lesion stage is critical to understanding the herd’s disease status.
  • Use the DD Check app to quickly record the presence of lesions in the various M stages.
  • The status of individual cows must be recorded in order to use the DD Infection Model to help predict potential DD outbreaks.

  • Users may access the DD Infection Model to initiate automated statistical prediction. This model may be accessed through the app once the required information on individual cows has been entered and an Internet connection is available.
  • Once the disease status is known, immediate action can be taken through an integrated prevention and control strategy to help decrease the incidence of DD.
  • As DD incidence is decreased, animal well-being is improved and productivity and profitability can rise.
